HOW TO READ BLOGS
from "energy equals MASS" (8.04)
Through no fault of my own, I've gotten interested in blogging. By way of introduction, let me enumerate the primary reasons I *used* to think blogs were stupid (probably sympathizing with many of you in the process):
1. Who cares? Blogs are just a forum for people to blab on in public about things nobody really wants to read. It's kind of pathetic, actually.
2. Who can keep track? With the gazillions of blogs out there, who has the time to go around finding and checking and reading them?
In the #2 department, my resolved blog indifference fell all to pieces when I discovered aggregation. In laymen's terms, this means that you can get all the posts from all the blogs you want to follow to appear on a single page, which is constantly updated. It's the obsessive-compulsive surfer's dream technology! And once I started playing with the aggregator, I started actually reading blogs, which got me more inspired in the #1 department.
I conceptualize blogging, in large part, as similar to the mass emails I used to write: a platform for journalling that's motivated by the desire to stay in communication with the people I care about, but in a style that's challenged by public exposure to remain fresh and intriguing.
Your consumption options:
1. You can visit me either here or at livejournal every once in a while and see if I've posted anything new. This is not my own preferred method, but I suppose it might satisfy some.
2. You can get my blog by email. Instructions are above.
3. You can feed my blog into your very own news aggregator, if you have one [ rss | atom ]. If you want an aggregator, I recommend bloglines (there are a number of newsreader application programs too, but I don't know anything about them). Or, if you use Firefox or Safari, they have built-in aggregation.
